Serenity in Brass: Echoes at Ekoji
Step into a world of musical elegance at the Ekoji Buddhist Temple, where the Brass Band of Northern Virginia will host an enchanting evening showcasing a rich tapestry of brass with a Japanese theme. This British-style brass band, composed of 30 masterful musicians, offers a performance steeped in the sophisticated and symphonic traditions of UK brass ensembles, yet distinctly tailored to echo the cultural narratives of Japan.
The concert's repertoire will feature several prominent Japanese composers. Teiichi Okano’s "Furusato," a piece that deeply reflects on the nostalgic essence of the island nation, and a wonderful arrangement of children’s folk songs by Bin Kaneda. We will also be performing Philip Sparke’s iconic "Year of the Dragon," in tribute to the current year’s zodiac, emblematic of the vigor and transformation symbolized by this mythical creature. These pieces, along with others that are carefully selected and arranged by Japanese composers, are designed to bridge the communal spirits of diverse backgrounds through the power of music.
Presented in collaboration with the Ekoji Buddhist Temple, this event underscores a commitment to cultural integration and community engagement. Admission is free, promoting accessibility while encouraging donations to support the nonprofit, volunteer-driven Brass Band of Northern Virginia.
Post-performance, attendees are invited to the temple’s social hall for desserts, coffee, and tea, available for purchase. This gathering will extend the evening’s communal experience and foster further dialogue among guests.
